Jai Jagannath ๐๐บ
Mahaprasad consolidates human bond, sanctifies sacraments and groom's the departing soul for its journey upwards.
Mahaprasad is Anna Brahma- Life force in the rice we consume. It is said that by the intake of the Mahaprasad, we take him and get his blessings. It is also believed that in the Kali Yuga man will feed himself on Anna or rice which was uncommon to other yugas. The consumption of Anna or rice being huge in the Jagannath temple accompanied by huge donations of rice( Anna Daan) makes Puri the Anna Kshetra ( Rice area). It is only temple in India and elsewhere on the planet where such a huge amount of rice is offered as Prasad and served as “Mahaprasad”
It is supposed that Mahaprasad originated in the remote past when Shri Jagannath was worshipped in his original form of Neelamadhava or the Blue God. In the Nilachal hills of Odisha, the tribal chief, Biswabasu kept the radiant blue idol of Krishna hidden in a secret cave and offered fruits to the Deity at the time of worship, as there were no rice paddies or vegetables fields in the forest.
Everyone morning when Biswabasu opened the cave temple with a small offering of fruits and flowers he found huge quantities of rice dishes and delightful curries. It was believed that Gods and Goddesses approached at night from the entire cosmos and the heaven to have divine spectacle of the Blue Lord. They would offer the best dishes of rice, vegetables, pulses and sweets to the God.
The spiritual fragrance of this heavenly food was so overpowering that all came to know that the food was Divine. This the origin of the Divine Mahaprasad is linked to Nilamadhaba, the Blue God of Nilachala.
Shri Jagannath is described as
“Mahaprabhu” The great Lord, His prasad is addressed as Mahaprasad. It is believed that the prasad is cooked by Goddess Mahalakshmi so it is Mahaprasad.
